Uniprint 5

Still one of the biggest challenges in Terminal Server environments. Lots of software manufacturers made additional software to solve problems with printer. For example Citrix and Tarantella build in their products a universal printer driver and a replication technology. Together with Thinprint and Tricerat Simplify Printing is UniPrint one of the biggest competitors in products specially set up for challenging printer issues.

Uniprint delivers two possibilities to use their software. In the first solution you only use UniPrint in combination with auto client printing. With this option you use the universal UniPrint driver on your TS which sends PDF format files to your client. On that client the UniPrint client takes cares that the file actually gets printed. The second solution is using the Uniprint Gateway. With this configuration the PDF files will be send to Uniprint Gateway, which takes care that the print job will be send to the print server or directly to a Lexmark printer. In the second solution also a Web based part can added. In this review we will look further to the second solution with the Uniprint Gateway (in this way we also take a look at the first solution mostly).

Printer drivers are still one of the most common problems/challenges on a Terminal Server environment. Nowadays there a several products to solve this problems, using a universal printer driver. A disadvantage of most products is that the printer are used, which are defined on the client (client printer mapping. The print job is in this situatiions send to the client, which processes it and send it to the printer or printer server. In case of a print server again the job is send on the network to the printer server and finally to the printer. Obviously Thinprint can do this, but much much more. For example Thinprint support Dedicated Printer Servers, NAT, Client gateways, compression, bandwidth control and more.

Simplify Printing

One of the biggest problems on Terminal Servers is printing. Tricerat has developed Simplify Printing to handle printing in Terminal Servers. Simplify Printing  automatically connects the client printers using a universal driver on the Terminal Server. This universal drivers sends the job to Simplify Printing client, which passes it to the printer driver on the client system.
